The Dominican Council, Order of Preachers
Simpson & Brown
Value: £970,000
Project Description
Works included stone, slate, lead, cast iron and timber window heritage repairs; internal refurbishment of the existing four storey building and a single storey new build Garden Chapel extension featuring irregular tree-shaped Corten steel structural columns, frameless glazing, a Sedum planted green roof and intricate timber finished curved barrel ceilings.
The Corten steel columns were contractor designed, meeting all technical requirements whilst maintaining the historical aspects and city garden ambience of the existing site. Our saltwater spraying of the columns ensured identically weathered appearance internally and externally and was carried out with extreme care over many weeks.
Design sensitivity was observed throughout and through our craft supervision and trades we delivered outstanding quality – the ‘Chapel of St Albert the Great’ received an RIBA National award.
